Apple Packing

I guess apple packing is easier and much better than apple picking; at least it doesn't require to work outdoor and carry a big basket over shoulder. May and I worked in a pretty good pack house in Nelson. My job was quite easy and I had no complaint about it. Nonetheless, speed and cooperation among the team members were important in order to ensure the work run smoothly and overall performance is above the par.

This was my working area and I used to distribute the trays on the device belts

Apples were distributing into different categories

Apples were dropping on the trays and ready for packing

Apples were packed into boxes at the end

We ate uncountable apples during the period we worked there and we actually tasted various types and sizes of apples. Some of us who liked cooking always used them in different recipes as appetizers, desserts, drinks...even so; we didn't get tedious to eat them every day as they are so fresh and sweet. As the saying goes ' An apple a day keeps the doctor away'. In fact, I had more than one apple a day and I had never felt sick during the period of working there :D
Well, these were some examples of extraordinary apples which always not to be packed.

Twins apple??

Mini apple vs ordinary apple :P

A baby apple attached on an apple :D
All in all, it's a great experience to earn both money and health while working there ;)

Beautiful Beach Life (Part I)

I often went to beach whenever I had days off, spending time at beach become part of my life in Nelson. People like swimming, jogging or simply have a walk at the beach. Besides, it's also a heaven for wind surfers and sun seekers.

It's pretty enjoying although sometimes I did nothing whatsoever. I usually just sit back, relax and looking at others :)

Once in a while I also liked an hour relaxed walking from the holiday park to Nelson city centre as I could pass along the beach and enjoyed viewing some of the spectacular waterfront views.

Back to Nelson Again

Nothing special, we worked in vineyard again in Blenheim. It's actually few days only. Before I had a chance to explore around, we were asked and given the choice to return to Nelson for working in an apple pack house. Of course, we opted for Nelson. Without thinking much, we repacked our luggages and followed a Korean contractor back to Nelson. In fact, he arranged the work and accomodation for us. Well, of course it's nice to stay in a private room with May, but we could hardly pay for the rent with our wages from the work he provided. We merely worked 2 or 3 days in a week and less than 5 hours per working day. We earned less than the accomodation rent, means our expenses > wage.
Recalled a contact number provided by a Taiwanese coworker who met in Hastings, May called up the number and talked to another contractor. The Malaysian contractor then became the person in charge of our new accomodation and job. As she promised, we worked in another fruit pack shed for steadier working hours and she arranged us to stay in a holiday park near the Tahunanui beach, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. We're settled.

Part of the accomodations in the holiday park & I had ever stayed in one of the units.

It's a pretty good choice of accomodation even if you are not intend to stay for work but just for a holiday. It's really nice to stay near the beach.
These were some of the travellers accomodation at the camp site.

If I didn't come back to Nelson again, surely I won't be able to explore more. I guess Nelson=Beach, I couldn't afford to miss...

Goodbye Nelson

The bus reached on time. May and I boarded the bus together. We actually weren't sure how long we were gonna stay in Blenheim, but we still hoped that we could be in Nelson for longer. Along the way leaving Nelson to Blenheim, there were picturesque scenes showing some of the gorgeous mountains in South Island.

First Visit to Nelson

Situated in the North West, Nelson is definitely one of the many beautiful towns in South Island.
City centre
Shops along the street
Cafe Affair of Nelson
Christ Church Cathedral on Church Hill

Maitai River

There are actually many great events and activities held in Nelson annually that worth your visit with or without paying. Nelson Trolley Derby was one of the events I saw during summer, by chance...very creative outcomes created by the enthusiastic racers.

It was a very sunny day, adults and children took part in the race. All the racers as well as the passengers seemed having a great moment.

May and I tried to find a job here so that we could stay longer in this beautiful town. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like a hope for us to work and stay here or perhaps we gave up too early. We spent a week  in Nelson only and we were downhearted as we hated to leave. However, I contacted my Brazilian friend and we decided to meet him in Blenheim and work with him.

While waiting for the nakedbus to arrive, we sit in front of the riverside and watching these adorable creatures, sad to say goodbye to them. :(
